About The Great Migration Experience (GME)

It's been nearly 100 years since our parents and grandparents started a wholesale relocation from the Deep South to northern cities, including Chicago. The pioneers who participated in what has become known as The Great Migration came here for a sea of opportunities that seem to have largely dried up today. Ironically, many black Chicagoans with that same thirst today are migrating back south to quench that thirst.

The 100th Anniversary of the start of the Great Migration presents a timely and appropriate opportunity for Chicago’s Black Community to reclaim its promised legacy of opportunity. To realize this, we need to raise awareness of this great legacy among our younger generations while re-energizing the proud pioneers of the Great Migration by paying fitting tribute to their courage and leadership.

Dedicated to defining value in Chicago's black experience, the Black Ink Group is planning a series of commemorative events and programs in honor of the Great Migration’s Centennial Anniversary with the hope that this landmark occasion will serve as a launch point for a new era of opportunity.

The Black Ink Group has convened a Steering Committee to advise and direct three primary initiatives known as the Great Migration Experience (GME).

To make these initiatives successful, we need your help.  The Black Ink Group is working with the GME Steering Committee to recruit supporters and volunteers to meet, fellowship and organize activities among immigrants from their home states.  We’re also welcoming second, third and fourth generation Children of pioneering immigrants to participate in the GME initiatives.
